Tragedy Strikes Akron Bicycle Club

The avid bicyclist was out riding with friends in the Akron Bicycle Club. It was early evening and the group was about 25 miles north of the city, near Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The 33-year-old was in a group of five riders pedaling east on scenic Snowville Road, going up a steep grade.

That’s when a pick-up truck going west turned into the group. The 33-year-old was killed and the other four injured — including one listed later in critical condition — when the collision happened in Brecksville, north of Akron.

According to the Akron Bicycle Club, the young husband was also the father of a 10-month-old baby girl.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash, trying to determine the speed of the truck, possible sun glare (it was going down a steep hill around sunset), driver attention and other factors, the city prosecutor said at a press conference. He noted that the pick-up driver had stopped at the scene of the collisions and was “very remorseful and very cooperative.”
