Common Accidents That Cause Facial Injuries

Facial injuries can be caused by a variety of events and are almost always evidence of negligence. Some of the most common causes of facial injuries we see at Kisling, Nestico & Redick includes:

  • Accidentes de tráfico
  • Accidentes de camión
  • Accidentes de moto
  • Accidentes de bicicleta
  • Accidentes laborales
  • Productos defectuosos
  • Negligencia médica
  • Mordeduras de perro
  • Accidentes en piscinas
  • Slip and Fall Accidents
  • Amusement Park Accidents

Types of Facial Injuries

Any damage to the area of the face that leads to burns, scars, lacerations, fractures, or loss of function is considered a facial injury. Although some facial injuries are more serious than others, all facial injuries can overwhelm you with medical bills, keep you away from work, and hinder your overall quality of life. Some examples of the types of facial injuries that are often caused by negligence are:

  • Bone Fractures- Bone fractures can occur to the jaw, nose, eye socket, cheekbone, and forehead.
  • Lacerations- Broken glass, shared plastic or metal, and other objects can result in lacerations that can only be repaired through cosmetic surgeries.
  • Burns- Fires and explosions can lead to burns that often require skin grafts that leave permanent scars on the victim’s face.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries- The ligaments, cartilage, tendons, and muscles are all known as “soft tissue.” Soft tissue injuries to the face are usually complex, lead to a loss of functions, and often require extensive surgical procedures.
  • Eye Injuries- Eye injuries can cause vision loss, blindness, or even the loss of the eye.
  • Dental Injuries- Chipped or fractured teeth, dislodged teeth, avulsed teeth, and root fractures are common dental injuries that require the immediate attention of a dentist or oral surgeon.
  • Facial Deformities- Facial bone damage can cause permanent deformities like sunken cheekbones and have a lasting impact on the physical appearance of an individual.
  • Nerve Damage- Since the facial nerve is responsible for all face movement, a damaged one can lead to paralysis on the left or right side of the face.

If you have sustained a facial injury that was not your fault, it is pertinent that you seek legal representation that will fight for compensation covering medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, disability, disfigurement, and other damages.

Chin Injuries from Falls

If you or your child suffered a fall and landed on the chin, it may result in a fracture of the mandible (jawbone), or damage to teeth by chipping or cracking.

While major jaw fractures are usually present in conjunction with other severe injuries, a less significant blow, such as an impact to the chin from a bicycle or trampoline fall, can result in a fracture of the mandibular condyles and/or posterior teeth.

In addition to a broken jaw, broken teeth, and possible scaring, hitting the bottom of the chin can also result in the jaw being forced back into the sensitive soft tissue. This can lead to long-term damage, often referred to as TMJ.

Facial Scarring

When wounds heal, they may result in an unsightly scar. And since your face is constantly exposed to the environment, scars on your face may have a harder time healing. Facial scarring from accidents can cause a permanent change in a victim’s appearance, and their negative impact can be accounted for in an injury claim or lawsuit in the form of damages for disfigurement.

Facial Injury Compensation

Depending on the severity, permeant scaring, and other factors involved, you may be able to recover compensation for all the economic and non-economic damages related to the facial damages you endured. This could be the difference between recouping the wages you lost, getting the medical care or plastic surgery you need, and putting your life back together.

If you or a loved one suffered a facial injury because of another’s negligent act, you could pursue an insurance claim or personal injury lawsuit. Whether you were hurt in a car accident, a fall, or by a defective product, you may be entitled to your:

  • Gastos médicos
  • Pérdida de ingresos
  • Discapacidad
  • Desfiguración
  • Dolor y sufrimiento
  • Angustia mental
  • Pérdida de la vida en común

Facial injuries and disfigurement often result in ongoing medical issues. This can include chronic pain and diminished quality of life. If you suffered a significant facial injury in a car wreck or any other accident, you might not be able to return to work or enjoy life as you did before the accident. It’s important to consider all your losses and ensure any settlement or award properly compensates you.

Who’s Liable for a Facial Injury?

Determining liability for a facial laceration or broken jaw can be complicated, and a lot depends on the circumstances. For instance, you may be able to recoup some losses through worker’s compensation if you were hurt on the job.

However, you may have other expenses and options when negligence is involved. For instance, if you suffered a broken cheekbone in a slip and fall, you may be able to hold the business or their insurance liable.
