This year’s winner, Elisha Burson, from Ontario, Ohio, demonstrated a deep understanding of distracted driving and presented an innovative yet sensible solution. Her plan was comprehensive, well-researched, and offered real-world solutions to limit screen time and decrease distraction, from limiting phone use and passenger interactions to avoiding eating while driving.
Burson’s solution also included an app for drives without Do Not Disturb functionality on their phones. Her app would help limit phone activity while driving by locking users out until they reach their destination. Ultimately, Elisha’s selection from over a thousand applicants, because of its practicality and attention to detail, aligns perfectly with the values of KNR and the spirit of the scholarship in Redick’s memory.
The $5,000 scholarship to be applied to tuition and other education-related expenses acknowledges Elisha’s hard work and dedication and serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing distracted driving in Ohio. KNR is committed to reducing the harm and injuries associated with distracted driving accidents, and the scholarship is just one way the law firm strives to achieve this goal.
Burson’s achievements extend beyond this scholarship win. She attends Pioneer Career & Tech Center and will attend Liberty University upon graduation. She is an avid volunteer, a varsity tennis player, and a recipient of the Scholar-Athlete and Coach’s Award for leadership and sportsmanship.
“It is heartening to see young people like Elisha taking an active interest in addressing real-world issues and developing practical solutions. Her creative idea to reduce distracted driving is just the beginning of what we can expect from her,” according to KNR Managing Partner John J. Reagan.
KNR would like to congratulate Elisha on this well-deserved win in memory of Robert Redick.
The KNR Distracted Driving Scholarship, awarded in Redick’s name, is a tribute to his passion for helping others. His dedication to fighting for the rights of the injured inspired the scholarship, and KNR remains committed to reducing the harm and injuries associated with distracted driving accidents in Ohio.
