The Robert Redick Memorial Scholarship Recipient Receives $5,000 Toward Higher Education.
Akron, OH (April 26, 2022) – An ambitious business proposal to create a national campaign targeted at exposing the dangers of distracted driving has earned one Brigham Young University – Idaho student a $5,000 college scholarship. Kisling, Nestico & Redick (KNR), an Ohio-based personal injury law firm, announced Cynthia Parrott of Bowling Green, Kentucky, as the winner of the annual Robert Redick Memorial Scholarship during a surprise virtual event on Tuesday.
Parrott’s plan to create a national program to promote safe driving, centers around two key points: awareness and accountability. She proposes posters, billboards, and video ads share compelling stories and statistics about people impacted by distracted driving. To accompany awareness, a class or assembly will provide aspiring and established young drivers with further direction to combat distracted driving and show the measures one can take when behind the wheel. Finally, Parrott proposes the class must be repeated every four to six years to keep the dangers top of mind.
“Distracted driving is an unnecessary danger, but we can reduce the risks,” Parrott explains in her proposal. “Many young adults do things out of ignorance or being unaware of how serious the consequences are. Sometimes they don’t realize the consequences until it is too late.”
Parrott also notes a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Association which shows, in 2019 alone, distracted driving killed 3,142 people. “Everything has to start somewhere, and through small and simple efforts we can start to make a difference,” Parrott says.
Parrott graduated from Greenwood High School in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in May 2021. She is currently a freshman undergraduate student at Brigham Young University – Idaho where she is studying English Education with a minor in Theatre Education. Upon graduation, she plans to enter the public school system, becoming a high school English teacher.
“Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents among teens and young drivers,” says KNR Managing Partner, John Reagan. “We created this scholarship to encourage young adults to think about the dangers of distracted driving, and to encourage them to discuss it with their peers.”
The Robert Redick Memorial Scholarship is named in honor of the late Robert Redick, a founding partner of the firm. Redick focused his career on fighting for his injured clients, to receive the fairest compensation following a crash. The scholarship was developed through the firm’s KNR Cares program which aims to make a difference beyond the courtroom.
