Our LocationsKisling, Nestico & Redick Founding Partner Rob A. Nestico spoke with WTOL 11 about hit-skip crashes and what Ohio drivers can do to protect themselves, following the August 2 crash in Toledo involving U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur. Toledo Police Chief Michael Troendle said investigators recovered DNA evidence at the scene and are confident they will identify the driver.
Nestico told WTOL that identifying a driver who leaves the scene is difficult when there is little physical evidence to work from. He pointed to dash cameras that record both inside and outside the vehicle as a worthwhile investment, because footage makes it easier for police to locate and prosecute a driver who flees.
He also urged drivers to review their own auto policies before they need them.
“Everyone thinks, ‘I buy my liability, and I’ve got full coverage,'” Nestico said. “Well, you got full coverage for the other person, you don’t have full coverage for yourself.”
Nestico shared, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is what applies when the at-fault driver cannot be identified or does not carry enough insurance to cover the damage. His advice is to ask your insurance broker about that coverage directly.
Chief Troendle added that after a crash, drivers should make sure everyone in the vehicle is safe before calling 911, take photos at the scene, and look for witnesses or nearby cameras.
