Tie One On For Safety Campaign Kick Off!Oct 01, 2014 Uncategorized
Columbus, Ohio, October 2014 – In Ohio, as elsewhere across the country, there is a significant increase in the number of alcohol-related crashes between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. These unfortunately result in a corresponding increase in the number of people killed and injured in alcohol-related crashes. This is why MADD hosts the Tie One On For Safety Campaign – now in its 28th consecutive year.
Alcohol-related crashes cost Ohioans an estimated $1.9 billion—people other than the drunk driver pay $1.2 billion of that amount. The public pays for nearly 75% of the cost of traffic crashes through taxes, increased insurance premiums, and travel delays. In Ohio, the estimated cost per injured survivor of an alcohol-related crash averages $109,000 (PIRE, 2000).
How Can You Support Tie One On For Safety?
Designate a Non-Drinking Driver Before Drinking Begins
This year, MADD is promoting the Give the Gift of a Designated Driver message in support of the Tie One On For Safety Campaign. The Give the Gift of a Designated Driver strategy is designed to encourage people to volunteer to be a designated sober driver for their friends and family during the holiday season.
Show Your Support With a Red Ribbon
Tie a MADD red ribbon in a visible location on your vehicle. Red ribbons symbolize a pledge to drive safe and sober over the holiday season, and serve as a reminder to other motorists who see the ribbons to do the same. We also ask the public to visibly display a MADD red ribbon on their vehicles to demonstrate support for law enforcement and their efforts to take drunk drivers off of our roads.
Host Parties Responsibly
Offer mock tails and other non-alcoholic beverages, and by providing alternate transportation or accommodations for guests who have been drinking.

For our employees to raise money is great, but for them to donate their personal time to make such a positive impact in our community is even greater.” Team KNR, headed by Captain Brandy Brewer, Director of Operations, says KNR donates to many charities throughout the year, but MADD is different. “We love being able to participate and raise money for many organizations, but the mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is something that is very personal for us. In our business, we see victims of drunk driving every day. We see families struggle to cope with losses that are caused by people who choose to drink and drive. We understand the mission of MADD because it coincides with our mission at KNR, to help keep the roads safe and to make people take responsibility for their actions. Team KNR couldn’t be more proud to support such a great charity,” says Brewer.
