Akron, OH – Winter is perfect for swimming…right? Well, that’s what attorneys and staff at Kisling, Nestico & Redick (KNR) are telling themselves in preparation for the 16th Annual Portage Lakes Polar Bear Jump. On Saturday, Feb. 23, Team KNR will transform into Polar Bears and take an icy plunge into the frigid lake for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. The law firm is hoping to raise $25,000 this year and invites others to support their team…or try to bump them off the leaderboard in friendly competition.

“Each time we’ve participated in the Polar Bear Jump, it has been a highlight of our year,” said Rob Nestico, KNR managing partner. “There’s something special about coming together with other members of our community and freezing to show our support to help those in need.”

Participating in the Polar Bear Jump is a part of KNR’s year-long campaign, KNR Cares About Kids, which is focused on helping kids throughout Ohio reach their full potential.

“More than 1 in 5 children in our eight-county service area are food insecure,” said Dan Flowers, president and CEO of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. “It just takes $1 to help provide four meals for our neighbors in need, so KNR’s contribution will help us provide 100,000 meals to individuals and families in our community who struggle with hunger. We’re thankful for the Portage Lakes Polar Bear Club and all of the teams taking the plunge to support our hunger-relief efforts.”

The Polar Bear Jump has grown each year; it started with 70 people jumping into the lake in 2004 and had nearly 800 participants last year. It was created by Portage Lakes Polar Bear Club members Kelly and Heather Pariso and Jeff and Debbie Fulkman as a fun activity to raise money for charity.

The Portage Lakes Polar Bear Club set a goal to raise $150,000 (600,000 meals) for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, which provides food and other essential items to nearly 500 food pantries, hot meal sites, shelters and other hunger-relief programs in eight Northeast Ohio counties.

KNR has been a proud sponsor of the Portage Lakes Polar Bear Jump throughout the years raising nearly $109,000 to support local organizations.

The plunge takes place Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. at 5031 Manchester Road in Akron.
