Akron, OH (August 23, 2021) – The personal injury law firm announced Ethan Westfall of Provo, Utah as the winner of the Robert Redick Memorial Scholarship during a surprise virtual event on Monday.

Westfall’s plan was selected as the best proposal among all the applicants. Motivated to help prevent fatalities and injuries caused by distracted drivers, Westfall’s idea calls for the creation of a digital marketing campaign that shares the narratives of four young fictional characters who have caused fatal crashes or become fatalities because of a texting-while-driving accident.

“Research shows that we as humans are programmed to respond to individual stories, not blunt statistics,” Westfall wrote in the proposal. “If you follow the plan and build a campaign around its core ideas, texting and driving will begin to ebb and lives will be saved as a result.”

Westfall graduated from Brigham Young University in April 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in business strategy. The scholarship will assist Westfall in pursuing a master’s degree in learning design, innovation, and technology at Harvard University. His goal is to enter a career in corporate training or product management following graduation.

“Twenty-five percent of fatal distracted driving crashes involve young adults,” said John Reagan, managing partner, KNR. “We started this scholarship four years ago to get students thinking about the dangers of distracted driving and to inspire young drivers to put their phones down in the car.”

This year, KNR renamed the KNR Don’t Text and Drive Scholarship to honor late founding partner Robert Redick, whose vision was to build a law firm to help injured people get the fairest settlements possible. The scholarship was developed as part of a commitment by KNR to combat distracted driving and is an annual component of the law firm’s KNR Cares program, through which KNR gives back to the community.
