What could be better than raising thousands of dollars for a great cause? Hundreds of men doing it in high-heeled shoes or dressed as superheroes. That’s exactly what many of the staff, associates, partners, and managing partner Rob Nestico of the Ohio law firm Kisling, Nestico & Redick are doing for the Annual Walk of Heroes.
To benefit the Rape Crisis Center of Medina and Summit Counties, the Walk of Heroes, formerly known as the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, once afforded men the often-hilarious chance to don a pair of high heels and wobble, stagger, and stumble a mile, all to draw attention to important issues and get people engaged.
“There are a lot of broken heels. The attorneys gain a whole new appreciation for women,” said KNR Director of Operations, Brandy Gobrogge.
Now in the event’s 12th year, the origin of KNR’s participation in the Walk of Heros started with Gobrogge, who began volunteering as an advocate with the Rape Crisis Center while in college. Upon graduation, she wanted to continue raising awareness and found that her employer was just as interested in helping the community.
The Rape Crisis Center aids victims of sexual abuse who are taken to the Dove Unit at Summa Health System – Saint Thomas Hospital in Akron. With KNR’s focus of helping those injured in devastating situations outside of their control, the firm felt the Rape Crisis Center’s purpose aligned with their own and were eager to get involved. Their work with the Walk of Heroes allows them to contribute to an organization that extends their core values.
This will be KNR’s sixth year as a participant and they have come in first place for donations each year, contributing a total of $57,000. This year more than 80 of KNR’s employees will be taking part, either sporting the classic high heel or embracing the new look in their best superhero attire, and they hope to contribute more than $5,000.
The event is set to take place at Lock 3 in downtown Akron on April 28, 2017, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
