Every year, the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) publishes statistics related to a variety of traffic-related incidents, including car crashes and car accident-related fatalities. The crash statistics from 2017 show that the number of accidents has actually declined. In 2017, there was a total of 65,140 crashes, whereas 2016 saw a total of 66,395 accidents. Injuries, too, declined in a year, from 19,547 in 2016, to 18,832 in 2017. Unfortunately, fatalities from car accidents rose in the same period of time. Car accident fatalities in 2016 fatalities totaled 511, but 2017’s total was 544.

Fatal Crashes Increased Over Five Years

Despite the number of safety features installed in cars, as well as the abundant information available urging Ohioans to develop safe driving habits, fatal car crashes are steadily rising each year. A look at the OSHP’s annual fatal crash statistics for the last five years shows the figure has risen from 918 in 2013 to 1,094 in 2017. A number of other related statistics have also increased in the past four years, including:

  • Traffic fatalities – from 990 to 1,179
  • Fatalities due to lack of seat belt – from 431 to 471
  • Pedestrian fatalities – from 88 to 145
  • Fatalities from DUIs – from 350 to 405

If you have lost a family member in a car accident, be sure to contact an Ohio wrongful death attorney. When an accident was the result of another driver’s carelessness, you are often able to collect damages on behalf of your loved one. Reach out to Kisling, Nestico & Redick today to learn more.

Common Causes of Car Accidents

While there are a number of reasons a person may crash their car, the most common factors in Ohio car crashes include:

  • Aggressive Driving (including actions such as following the car in front of you too closely, failing to yield to oncoming traffic, changing lanes abruptly and without signaling)
  • Speeding
  • Inability to maintain control of the car
  • Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Distracted driving (which includes eating or drinking, punching information into a GPS, texting or talking on a phone)

When you’re behind the wheel of your car adhering to the rules of the road, you expect other motorists to act in a similar fashion. When another driver speeds, tailgates you, texts instead of paying attention to the road, or fails to use their turn signals, they put everyone around them at risk for great harm. If you’ve incurred injuries in an Ohio car accident, reach out to an attorney right away for help.
