A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when a bump, blow, jolt, or sudden head injury damages the brain. Millions of people sustain TBIs each year in the United States according to the National Institutes of Neurological Disorders. More than half arise from motorcycle accidents.

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that per mile traveled, motorcycle fatalities happen 35 times more than passenger car occupant fatalities. Therefore, it’s logical to assume that more motorcyclists suffer TBIs than those involved in car accidents.

If you’ve been involved in a motorcycle accident that resulted in a TBI, you need some who understands the pain and financial stress it inflicts on you and your loved ones. Ohio Motorcycle Accident Claims

If a motorcycle rider is seriously injured or killed because of a negligent driver, the rider, or his or her surviving family members, may be entitled to legal compensation. In Ohio, this compensation can include payments for medical bills, income loss, disfigurement, loss of consortium (i.e., loss of family relationships), mental trauma, and general pain and suffering.

A rider’s family may also be able to claim wrongful death benefits including funeral expenses, financial contribution losses, and the loss of their loved one’s comfort.

Helmets & Preventing Motorcycle Accident TBIs

Unsurprisingly, the NHTSA found that motorcyclists who were wearing helmets at the time of a crash were far and away less likely to sustain facial injuries, cranial injuries, or TBIs when compared to those who weren’t wearing them.

It should also not come as a surprise that a helmet is the only thing that can really protect your head in the event of a crash. Given that your head is completely vulnerable to all injuries while not wearing a helmet, your brain is more likely to suffer damage in the event of a motor vehicle accident.

Unfortunately, this does little to deter many motorcyclists. Seeing as TBIs are one of the most common injuries motorcyclists are likely to sustain in an accident, it makes sense that riders should wear them, as it’s the only thing that can protect them from a TBI or other permanent disability.

Dealing With a TBI After of a Motorcycle Accident

TBIs are extraordinarily difficult injuries to treat, mainly because of trauma caused by too much pressure inside the skull. This building pressure alone is enough to cause serious, irreversible brain damage. In addition, ruptured blood vessels in the brain are hard to isolate and repair during emergency surgery, and a brain without blood cannot survive very long at all.

Of course, treating a TBI incurs astronomical medical costs, which can decimate your savings if you are medically uninsured or underinsured. In addition to typical TBI treatment costs, you’ll potentially need to deal with follow up care, home modifications, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and all sorts of added medical expenses.
