Exactech Knee & Ankle RecallOur Ohio attorneys are here to fight for you.
Exactech knee and ankle implant devices made since 2004 did not include the necessary vacuum bag meant to preserve the implants from deterioration. This product defect resulted in undue wear of the plastic insert within the replacement and many patients are experiencing painful complications and the need for additional surgery.
It is expected that the recall includes approximately 145,000 knee implants and approximately 1500 ankle implants – potentially hundreds of thousands of patients.

Why Are Exactech Knee & Ankle Implants Being Recalled?
Most of the knee and ankle replacements manufactured by Exactech since 2004 came with polyethylene plastic inserts that were made “out of specification,” and were capable of letting oxygen into the packaging.
This increased oxygen exposure, while the implant was being stored, can lead to a chemical reaction called “oxidation.” As a result of oxidation, the plastic becomes weakened, causing them to wear out sooner and more likely to crack, break, and otherwise fail inside a patient’s body.
Premature wear of the plastic liners within your knee or ankle replacement can cause painful symptoms and the need for an invasive corrective procedure referred to as revision surgery. Revision is usually a more complicated surgery than the original joint replacement and often requires longer surgical times, additional components, and prolonged recoveries.
Signs of a Faulty Knee & Ankle Implant
Symptoms associated with failing Exactech knee and ankle joint implants are usually related to bone loss or particle debris being released from the degraded plastic liner. Make sure you contact your doctor if you are experiencing any of the following. Your Exactech implant may be one of the recalled devices:
- Clicking or grinding noises from your implant
- Pain while walking
- Swelling in the joint
- Chronic or worsening joint pain
- Instability or limited mobility
- Osteolysis or bone tissue loss
- Device failure or malfunction
- Revision surgery
