Matthew P. Banks’ legal experience began as a JAG in the U.S. Marine Corps. In 2001, while in college at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, Matt enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve as a supply administration clerk. He performed his monthly reserve duty in Cincinnati and achieved the rank of Corporal. In 2005, he was commissioned as an officer in the Marine Corps Reserve and attended law school in Michigan until 2008. Upon passing the bar exam, he entered active duty in the Marine Corps to serve as a JAG.

Matt served as a Marine JAG from 2009 to 2018. In that time, he gained a significant amount of civil and criminal litigation experience. He was competitively selected to earn a Master of Laws in Government Procurement and Environmental Law, he deployed to Afghanistan as a detainee operations attorney, and he litigated toxic tort, employment, and disability matters in various federal courts. Before leaving military service, he achieved the rank of Major.

From 2018 to 2019, after leaving the Marine Corps, Matt worked in the private sector at a law firm in Washington, D.C., specializing in commercial litigation and government contracts. He then opened a solo practice in D.C., from 2019 to 2020, handling a variety of legal matters, including disability claims and litigation before the Veterans Benefits Administration. In 2020, he moved back to Ohio and served as legal advisor to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Commander and subordinate commanders on a variety of legal disciplines such administrative law, labor law, contract law, environmental law, real property law, claims, information law, and ethics.

Matt is married and lives with his wife in Columbus, Ohio, though they are both Youngstown natives. In their free time, they love traveling, watching professional sports, and are always looking for the next opportunity to compete against each other in all things, including fantasy football.
