Akron Car Accident Statistics

Like across the country, fatal crashes continue to increase in Summit County, and safety experts with AMATS are unsure why. Some believe that driving under the influence and while distracted has led to more and more accidents. AMATS Transportation Engineer and Improvement Coordinator, Dave Pulay recently stated, “Cars are getting safer. Roads are getting safer. There’s only three variables: The roads, the car, and the driver. So, if two of those things are getting better, it must be the driver that’s getting worse.”

While the AMAT discovered that fatal crashes have been increasing since 2014, they also found that accidents, in general, have slightly decreased. From 2015 to 2016, vehicle accidents declined from 18,589 to 18,358. Additionally, the number of injuries also went down.

Intersection Accidents Are Common in Summit County

In Akron, there are far too many intersection accidents per year. The AMATS findings revealed that the city has the most high-crash locations in the entire Summit County area.

Some of the most dangerous intersections in Akron include:

  • South Maple Street and Rhodes Avenue
  • South Broadway and East Thornton Street
  • East Market Street and Mogadore Road/Inter-state 76 ramps

It is vital to understand that while the above intersections are hazardous, there are many other dangerous road areas in Akron. Therefore, when you and your loved ones are driving, it is essential to practice the proper safety precautions, which include:

  • Driving the speed limit
  • Being a defensive driver
  • Putting your phone in an out-of-reach place
  • Pulling over if you get tired
